Altenau: a valley gets its river back

The Altenau is a creek in Germany, close to Paderborn. In consequence of a flood, it was canalised and impounded since the 1970s. However, decades of dedication finally paid off: the Altenau is now being restored. Recently, another river section was given back to nature.

Open letter: monument relocation in Hasankeyf

Once again, European companies participate in the destruction of the world heritage city Hasankeyf by the Ilisu dam. A Dutch and a Greek company are planning to provide the necessary technical know-how for the relocation of a 600 year old monument and therewith contribute to the inundation of this ancient city.

Albania: Lawsuit against hydropower project on the Vjosa has been filed

The planned destruction of the Vjosa, one of Europe’s last big wild rivers, is now being challenged in court.

A good restoration project can increase the fish populations very fast if the remaining densities are not too low” Since 2010 the Duero River Basin Authority has removed more than 115 barriers, reconnecting more than 700 km of rivers. Vacancy: Project coordinator (25h)

Riverwatch – a society for the protection of rivers based in Vienna – is looking for a project coordinator (25h) for a de-damming initiative. This campaign aims to analyze hydropower projects in Central and Eastern Europe and to determine which ones are to be removed due to ecological and/or economic reasons. With this campaign we are trying to implement the de-damming movement, which is already well- established in the US, to Europe.

Program announcement: Madness Hydropower – Sunday at 16:30 im ZDF

On the occasion of the World Rivers Day, the ZDF will air a documentary about the Balkan Rivers and the dam craze that puts them at risk on Sunday, September 25 at 16:30. This episode of the ZDF “planet e” series will depict the beauty of these rivers as well as the opposition against the imminent river regulations and damming.
