The Bihać City Council has stopped the construction of two small hydropower plants in the Una National Park in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The projected plants Martin Brod and Dobrenica undermine the very idea of a national park as protected area and would destroy one of the most magnificent rivers in the Sava River Basin.

Der Stadtrat von Bihać hat den Bau von zwei kleinen Wasserkraftwerken im Una Nationalpark in Bosnien-Herzegowina vorerst gestoppt. Die geplanten Kraftwerke in Martin Brod und Dobrenica untergraben die Idee eines Nationalparks als Schutzgebiet und würden einen der beeindrucktesten Flüsse im Save- Einzugsgebiet  zerstören.

On July 1, the European Court of Justice ruled in favour of rivers in a landmark decision. The verdict strengthens the protection of rivers. It is specifically about the interpretation of the “no deterioration" provision of the Water Framework Directive. According to the ruling, projects mustn’t deteriorate a river in a single water quality element, even if the overall ecological condition is not considerably altered.

Der Europäische Gerichtshof hat am 1. Juli ein richtungsweisendes Urteil zum Schutz der Flüsse gefällt. Dadurch wird der Schutz der Flüsse gestärkt. Konkret wurde klargestellt, was genau eine Verschlechterung im Sinne der Wasserrahmen-Richtlinie ist. Laut EuGH dürfen Projekte selbst einzelne Komponenten des Gewässerzustandes nicht verschlechtern, auch wenn sich der ökologischen Gesamtzustand dadurch nicht verändert.

After being awarded the Great Binding Prize for Nature Conservation last November, Ulrich Eichelmann is now honored with the Wolfgang Staab Prize for Nature Conservation for his outstanding achievements in regards to river and floodplain protection. The prize was awarded for the first time.

Nach dem Großen Binding Preis für Natur- und Umweltschutz im November wurde Ulrich Eichelmann nun in Rastatt mit dem Wolfgang Staab-Naturschutzpreises für seine besondere Leistung im Fluss- und Auenschutz ausgezeichnet. Der Preis wurde heuer zum ersten Mal vergeben.
