New Alliance for the Protection of the Balkan Rivers - "Different Countries - Collective Struggle"

Under the slogan "Lets defend the Balkan Rivers", activists from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, and Serbia Sarajevo met in Sarajevo on Saturday, July 3, to decide on a pan-Balkan alliance for the protection of the rivers in the region. From now on, the various organizations want to work more closely together, because the issues are the same in all countries: the threat of widespread destruction of rivers and streams is caused by corruption, criminal schemes, political ignorance as well as wrong financial incentives to destroy nature. The will to change this and to save the Balkan rivers unites more and more people all over the Balkans and proves once again: Rivers unite - Dams divide!

On Saturday, activists from various Balkan countries met in Sarajevo to initiate a new movement. Many of them have been fighting against the construction of hydropower plants for years, for example on the Neretvica (BIH) or Stara Planina (Serbia), in Kosovo or in Montenegro. © Ulrich Eichelmann
